Good morning! Good morning! Good morning! Good morning!
In the lower years of HAVO and VWO, you study two modern foreign languages in addition to English. In the first year, you study French, and in the second and third years, German is added. After that, your choice will depend on factors such as your subject profile choice in the upper years.
In addition to regular lessons, there are also excursions and trips abroad to immerse yourself in the culture and language. Dutch is also, of course, part of this learning environment!
Classical Studies, Greek and Latin
Are you doing bilingual HAVO or VWO? If so, you'll be taking some of your subjects in English and speaking English for a large part of your school time. If you choose a bilingual study program, you'll also take the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) exam and the International Baccalaureate (IB) exam. Find out more about bilingual education.
For gymnasium students, alongside Dutch, English, French, and German, there are also lessons in Latin and Greek. How the different languages are allocated to your timetable can be found in the lesson schedule.
Dutch
The Dutch language subject is sometimes wrongly seen as “something we already know how to do,” but in secondary school, it is precisely the key to success in every other subject.
Do you think Dutch is just about spelling and d's and t's? Not at all. Dutch is the engine for your diploma. Whether you're writing a razor-sharp essay, unmasking a fake news article, or giving a convincing pitch: Dutch teaches you the skills that will benefit you for the rest of your life.
In the lower school, the Dutch language subject primarily focuses on building a solid foundation. Where you learned how to read and write in primary school, in the first few years of secondary school, you learn how to use the language smartly and effectively. Creative writing, expanding vocabulary, creating a vlog, reading fiction: these are a few examples through which you will be immersed in another world.
What do a medieval knight's tale, a modern psychological thriller, and a cutting-edge column have in common? They allow you to see the world through someone else's eyes. In the upper years, you'll discover the power of stories. You'll also learn to analyse complex texts, write beautifully, and reflect on societal issues. Language is more than communication; it's identity, culture, and emotion. Discover the richness of our language and broaden your horizons with the Dutch subject.
