Introduction to scientific education
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) has developed the Pre-University College for motivated students in years 4, 5, and 6 of VWO who want to get to know higher education.
This Pre-University College (PUC) is a partnership between the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and secondary schools in the region. Werenfridus is a member of this partnership.
Masterclasses
To offer pupils a programme that is both optimally suited and enriching, masterclasses have been developed on a wide variety of topics. These masterclasses have been prepared in terms of content by development teams, consisting of teachers from secondary education and the VU.
The students who will participate in the masterclasses will be guided by a team of lecturers from the VU.
Intellectual and social
Taking part in the Pre-University College prepares students for their university studies and helps them to discover and develop their talents. However, they are not only intellectually challenged: they also learn social skills that are important for functioning well in our diverse society.
Enthusiasm
In recent years, many students from Werenfridus have travelled to the VU (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) to attend a masterclass. One student opted for the masterclass ‘The Special Brain’ and was able to dissect a real brain, while another chose a masterclass where they discovered how Starbucks Coffee Company became so successful.
What all pupils have in common is the enthusiasm with which they followed the masterclasses. In addition, they were also able to familiarise themselves with scientific research, which helped them with setting up their own profile paper at Werenfridus.
Orientation
As a school, we believe it's important that pupils can develop further, and that at VWO level they can already be introduced to scientific research, thereby better orientating themselves for further study. And that is precisely why we offer the Pre-University College.
