Healthy School

Healthy School

As a Healthy School, we consistently focus on improving the health of our pupils and staff. In addition to the Healthy School accreditation, we achieved the ‘Movement and Sport’ theme certificate in July 2022.

Working on health at school pays off. It contributes to better school performance, reduced school dropout rates, and a healthier lifestyle. This way, we ensure active and healthy pupils and staff, a safe school environment, and a positive atmosphere, whilst the school also focuses on the personal and social development of its pupils.

Healthy canteen

This school year, our canteen has achieved the ‘Golden Scale’ certificate. This demonstrates our commitment to providing healthy products in our school canteen and our compliance with the strict guidelines of the Nutrition Centre. More information about the Healthy School label can be found at gezondeschool.nl.

Smoke-free school grounds

Our school aims to provide pupils with a healthy, smoke-free learning environment, and therefore our school premises are smoke-free. Research shows that half of all smokers start on the school grounds. This applies to everyone: pupils, staff, parents/guardians, and visitors. Smoking on our premises will also no longer be permitted during parent-teacher evenings and other activities outside of school hours.

At present, 75 pupils a day in the Netherlands become addicted to smoking. Young people's brains are extra sensitive to the addictive effects of nicotine. The younger a smoker starts, the greater the chance of addiction. A smoke-free schoolyard helps pupils not to (start) smoking and also prevents unwanted passive smoking.

Movement and sport

In our beautiful, innovative building, the sports faculty occupies an important place. We have 4 modern sports halls, each with its own theme. Furthermore, we have a magnificent large sports field on our own grounds.

At Werenfridus, we consider sport, exercise, and health to be important. You'll see this reflected in the timetable, our annual plan, and in the opportunities for physical activity outside of lessons during your school day, as well as in the range of extracurricular activities you can sign up for.

Lesson table

Apart from the subject of PE (Physical Education), in the upper years at our school you can choose the subject BSM (Movement, Sport and Society). The emphasis in BSM is not only on physical abilities, but also on tactical insight and social aspects. Theory is also covered during the lessons. Where physical education stops, BSM continues. The level of BSM is generally higher than PE lessons and requires good physical condition and is often chosen by students with ambitions in sport. Common components of BSM are:

  • Athletics
  • Basketball
  • Gymnastics
  • volleyball
  • Swimming
  • Softball
  • Judo

Less

During physical education lessons, we focus on the following areas: games, gymnastics, athletics, self-defence, and movement to music. Sports days are also part of this, where we offer a varied programme for each year group. This is a conscious choice to allow students to develop different skills. During the sports days, students who choose the BSM (Behavioural and Social Management) subject are involved so that they can experience the practical side of the subject.

In the lower school, the emphasis is on learning and improving sports and exercise activities. In the upper school, elective and level-based lessons are central. The final examination classes will also explore other sports outside of school.

Sports break

Movement is important, but even more importantly: sport is fun. During every main break, students can participate individually or in small groups in a sport of their choice in one of our beautiful sports halls or our sports field next to the school.

Tabor X-Tra!

In addition to the regular gym classes, we also organise Tabor X-Tra! activities. These are after-school activities on Tuesday afternoons. Pupils who sign up for these will have space in their timetables to participate.

This programme offers all pupils the chance to try out various sports and cultural activities on Tuesday afternoons, in addition to their regular lessons. Examples include CrossFit, horse riding, freerun, judo, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing or surfing.

Elite Sports Academy

Tabor College, of which Werenfridus is a part, has been a since 2006 Elite Sports Academy. The Top Sports Talents Schools are part of the National Organisation for Education and Top Sports, an organisation that works closely with NOC*NSF. The main goal is to give talented athletes the opportunity to combine their studies and sports. There are currently thirty Top Sports Talents Schools throughout the Netherlands. The Tabor College is the only school in eastern West Friesland.

We are happy to think along with you if you have elite athlete status from NOC*NSF. If you do not have elite athlete status but you practice sport at a high level and train a lot, we are also happy to use our expertise to help you combine elite sport and school.

Together, we contribute to a healthy learning environment for everyone. Would you like to know more about the Healthy School? Please contact your mentor or team leader.
